The highlights of the stage
The first stage of the 57° Giro Ciclistico Internazionale della Valle d'Aosta - Mont Blanc starts in the cheering city of Pollein - Gran Place after the missing 2020 edition.
In the fast roads of the first part of the stage the peloton rides quickly and compact till the climb of Jeanceyaz, where Mattia Gaffuri (VC Mendrisio) takes the KOM.
The rythm is high cause the riders of the Developement Team DSM wants to break their opponents' legs. Indeed, the first riders to transit at the KOM of Grand Brissogne are Gianmarco Garofoli and Henri Vandenabeele, both for DSM.
After the sprint catch of Pollein won by Gianmarco Garofoli the race explodes at the bottom of the steep climb of Terreblanche. Kamiel Bonneu (Basso Team Flanders) makes the pace, followed by the new zelandeer Reuben Thompson (Groupama FDJ) and the colombian Didier Merchan (Colombia Tierra de Atletas).
During the last climb Thompson takes the lead with confidence but Alessandro Verre (Team Colpack) is stronger and reach the top first. The two riders start the descend together thinking of the win, behind them a small chasing group still has winning dreams. At 4 km to go, Verre attacks and manage to leave Thompson behind.
At the finish line, Alessandro Verre win with a 31 seconds gap over Reuben Thompson. The sprint finish of the chasing group is won by Sergio Meris (Team Colpack), 1' 31'' aftet the leader. The yellow (Eaux valdôtaines) and the white (Regione Valle d'Aosta) jersey go to Alessandro Verre and the polka dot one (CVA Energie) to Reuben Thompson. The Belgian Robin Orins (Acrog Tormans) takes the red jersey.
