The highlights of the stage
The village that gave birth to Maurice Garin, winner of the first Tour de France in 1903, hosted the Grand Depart of the 59° Giro Ciclistico Internazionale della Valle d'Aosta Mont-Blanc with a 80km stage.
Despite the very hot day, the start was fast and furious, thanks to a rolling course. The first sprint catch of the race in Fénis is won by Sebastian Putz (Austria National Team), in front of Stefano Rizza (Team Hopplà) and Paul Buschek (Austria National Team). Three riders escape from the peloton while heading towards Aosta and challenge for the second sprint catch of the day. In Villeneuve the Swiss champion Elia Blum (Tudor Pro Cycling) wins the Sprint Catch, in front of Dylan Vandenstorme (Circus Re Uz) and the irish Kevin McCambridge (Trinity Racing). These riders pass for the first time under the finish line heading towards the KOM at the Col dìIntrod. During the final climb before the finish, they are joined by Brieuc Rolland (Groupama FDJ), Witse Meeusen (Alpecin Deceuninck) and Daniel Lima (Israel Premier Tech). Vandenstorne wins the final sprint ahead of Meeusen and Rolland and takes three jerseys (Yellow Jersey Eaux Valdôtaines, Polka dot jersey CVA and the points blue jersey Valle d'Aosta). The peloton gap is 4 seconds, Sergio Meris (Colpack Ballan CSB) is the first ridere of the peloton. The Portuguese Daniel Lima takes the white jersey Cervino Ski Paradise for the young classification and the Swiss Elia Blum takes the sprint catch jersey Haute Savoie Le Département.

Situated at 776 meters above sea level at the entrance of the Valgrisenche, in a basin planted with vineyards, Arvier represents the stubbornness in the use of all the land available, raising terraces on the sunniest side over the centuries. Here the famous red wine Enfer d’Arvier is produced, one of the first Aosta Valley wines to obtain the denomination D.O.C. In Roman times this village was called Arebrigium (from are=nesar and briga=hill) and was a military encampment along the road to Gaul, where we can still see some rests.
