The highlights of the stage
The first significant action of the day is recorded at the bottom of the climb of Perloz with a quartet of athletes consisting of Daniel Lima (Israel Premier Tech), Roman Ermakov (Cycling Team Friuli), Alex Bogna (Alpecin Deceuninck) and Martin Tjotta (Bourg Ain) who launches the attack. Their action will distinguish the whole first part of the race with the group of the best to control. The star of the race, therefore, is Roman Ermakov who wins in the order the first GPM of Perloz, the Sprint Catch of Montjovet, the GPM of Payé and the Sprint Catch of Saint Christophe. The last meters of the climb of Allein, however, see the attack of Tjotta that passes at the front of the GPM. Behind, as for the first of the general ranking, nothing to report with the large group of the best to control themselves. The only sortie, before Doues, is the one of Davide De Cassan (Cycling Team Friuli), more than ever willing to recover the ground lost in the general classification in the second stage. The rider from Trentino, then, launches in pursuit of the four fugitives towards the finish line, reaching all the riders in front except for the Norwegian Tjotta who defends with his teeth his leadership. The final is uncertain until the end, therefore, with Tjotta who prevails with only 12 seconds ahead of De Cassan and 21 seconds over Bogna. Behind them the big ones fight only in the last kilometers of the final ascent and get close to the podium with Isaac Del Toro (Monex) ahead of Darren Rafferty (Hagens Berman) and Alexy Faure Prost (Circus King Uz). The yellow jersey Eaux Valdotaines David Golliker (Groupama FDJ) has som slight difficulties but manages to maintain the leadership in the general classification, followed by Faure Prost and Darren Rafferty (Hagens Berman). After this stage, the leader jerseys are on the shoulders of David Golliker ( yellow Eaux Valdotaines and white of the young Matterhorn Ski Paradise), Martin Tjotta ( a pois CVA climbers), Alexy Faure Prost (blue Aosta Valley Region points) and Roman Ermakov (red Haute Savoye Le Département).

This destination is famous because of its mild climate and it is known as the ‘Riviera of the Alps’, since here some typical Mediterranean plants, such as palms, olive trees and umbrella pines, proliferate. This good position, sheltered from cold winds, and a series of other positive factors, made this town a sought-after destination since the end of the XVIII century. The town is famous for its thermal baths and its Casinò, which attracted both the aristocracy and the Italian and international jet-set.

Bionaz, one of the largest municipalities in the Aosta Valley, lies at an altitude of 1600 meters, at the head of the Valpelline valley, and is surrounded by an amphitheatre of beautiful peaks reaching 4000 metres and culminating in the Dent d’Hérens. The resort offers some views of splendid and unspoiled nature, some tasty gastronomic specialities to discover ancient flavours, some amazing crafts linked to former traditions and some proud forms of agriculture and livestock farming handed down from generation to generation. In the village there are also several small hamlets built on the sunniest slopes.
